Family Fun for Tenants and Residents
17/6/09
2010 Rotherham is urging Rotherham tenants and residents not to miss out on a free Multicultural Open Day which promises fantastic fun for all the family.

Organised by RotherFed (Rotherham Federation of Tenants & Residents), the event on Saturday, June 27 from 11am to 5pm in Eastwood is open to everyone and is designed to celebrate the diversity of cultures in Rotherham.

From salsa dancing to Balkan music, cream teas to Chinese painting, there will be something for everyone at the Springwell Gardens Community Centre and the Eastwood View Centre Church, both on Eastwood View.

Stages at the adjacent venues will offer entertainment throughout the day including ‘In the Mix’, a young people’s dance group from Wath, music from Nic Harding - acoustic melodic pop with a tinge of folk, and Tambores Ritmicos, a samba band from St Thomas’s Junior and Infant School in Kilnhurst.

A variety of stalls, plus workshops such as belly dancing, circus skills, tai chi and Chinese painting, as well as free food from around the world, mean there will be something for everyone throughout the day.

The event will be opened by Rotherham’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Rose McNeeley.

A free park and ride service will operate from the headquarters of 2010 Rotherham Ltd on Chesterton Road (next to KP Nuts) with pick-ups every 15 minutes. A heritage bus from the South Yorkshire Transport Museum will run from Chesterton Road to the venue every 30 minutes.

Sneh Soni 2010 Rotherham’s Residents Involvement Manager said: “The Multicultural Open Day promises to be a really exciting event and we are urging our customers not to miss out on the fun.

“2010 Rotherham works closely with RotherFed to support new and existing tenants and resident groups across the Borough. One of the features of the event will be stalls hosted by Tenants and Residents Associations giving visitors a chance to find out how they can become more involved in their communities through joining or setting up a tenants and residents group.”

Steve Ruffle, RotherFed’s Development Manager, said: “The Multicultural Open Day is about bringing people from across the Borough together in a celebration of the diversity of our various Rotherham communities.

“From Bhangra dancing to poetry, Chinese lantern making to Irish music, there is guaranteed to be something to interest everyone. Whether you have always wanted to walk on stilts or try belly dancing, here is your chance to give it a go.”

Rotherfed – which represents 32 Tenants and Residents Associations across the Borough – received funding to organise the Multicultural Open Day from the National Lottery Awards for All.

The event also marks RotherFed’s recent move to the Springwell Gardens Community Centre which is designed to take the organisation out into the heart of the local communities it serves.
