Helping tenants take their First Steps
8/6/09
2010 Rotherham is helping its most vulnerable tenants take their first steps with the introduction of a new tenancy support team.
The team, known as First Steps, was established to reduce the number of tenants who were struggling to adjust to moving into a new home and, in some cases, ending their tenancy within the first few weeks
First Steps works with vulnerable tenants to provide the appropriate support according to their needs. This support could include helping tenants access services, such as repairs and maintenance, providing financial advice, e.g. household budgeting, and facilitating links with other support agencies.
First Steps works in partnership with other agencies, such as Social Services, South Yorkshire Police, probation services, criminal justice teams, drug and alcohol services, Rotherham Council and the NHS.
Whilst any new tenant is offered support at the start of their tenancy, the tenants who tend to benefit from the service include homeless families, single parents, people with disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health problems, or people leaving care and setting up home for the first time.
Mark Hawberger, 2010 Rotherham’s Tenancy and Estate Management Controller, said: “The First Steps team will provide vital extra support for those tenants who need it the most. Some tenants might need long term support to help them sustain their tenancy and live independently. Others may only need the extra support for a short time.
“Although First Steps is still in its infancy, it is already beginning to have a positive impact on our most vulnerable tenants. Initial feedback from customers and partner agencies has been promising.”
