Making Life Easier for Vulnerable Residents
19/11/09
2010 Rotherham is making life easier for some of Rotherham’s most vulnerable residents by installing aids and making adaptations to elderly and disabled people’s homes.
The work is carried out by 2010 Rotherham on behalf of Rotherham Borough Council for customers in both council and privately-owned properties.
Work can range from fitting grab rails, to installing walk-in showers, to constructing property extensions, following an assessment by an Occupational Therapist and means testing by Rotherham Borough Council’s Adaptations Services.
Rawmarsh resident Hilary Cahill is one satisfied customer who recently had work carried out in her home. The layout of Hilary’s stairs and an upstairs bedroom were altered to enable the installation of a new stairlift.
Hilary says: “I’m over the moon with the changes that have been made to my home. I am now much more settled and secure in the knowledge that I do not need to move anywhere else.
“I honestly can’t fault 2010 Rotherham. They worked brilliantly, in partnership with the Council, the Occupational Therapist, the carpet-fitter, decorator and stairlift company. Everyone worked really hard - and quickly - to get the job done.
“It was originally thought that I might have to move to a different property, but everyone liaised to find a better solution. There was some upheaval while the work was taking place, but everyone tidied up after themselves each day and it has definitely been worth it.”
2010 Rotherham was awarded the Council’s aids and adaptations contract in December 2008 after successfully completing a lengthy tender process involving 43 other organisations.
Graham Whittingham, 2010 Rotherham Repairs and Maintenance Manager, said: “It is always the preferable option for an elderly or disabled customer to remain in their own home, where possible. Not only is it cost-effective, it has a real impact on an individual’s quality of life.
“We get a lot of compliments from customers about how pleased they are with the service and the difference our work has made to their lives.”
Anyone who believes they would benefit from aids or adaptation work should contact Rotherham Borough Council’s Assessment Direct on 01709 822330. Further details are available on the Council’s website at www.rotherham.gov.uk.
