Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs)

An ABC is a contract setting out standards of behaviour expected in the future, and is generally used to stop anti-social behaviour by young people aged from 10-18, although they can also be used for adults. The success rate in turning around behaviour is excellent with no further enforcement action needed in the vast majority of cases. This is because the unit deals with the root causes of anti-social behaviour so the behaviour can be amended and the problem does not re-occur. If the anti-social behaviour continues, the next step could be an Anti-Social Behaviour Order.

The Acceptable Behaviour Contract approach is victim-based as frequently the young person carrying out the anti-social behaviour is in fact vulnerable themselves, for example, the problem could stem from poor parenting, alcohol or drugs. Rotherham Borough Council'sĀ Anti-social Behaviour Unit organises Parenting Programmes and is working on a Family Intervention Project, where they work intensively with the family unit.
