TENANTS EXPERIENCES OF THE DECENT HOMES SCHEME

Lesley, who has also had a new fitted bathroom, rewiring, central heating and new fireplace, said: “It’s not often that you are able to put your feet up and be given a special treat. I think it’s wonderful. We think the team did a fantastic job and deserve recognition for their work.”

A Beautiful Job!

Tenant Derek Hart is over the moon with his new kitchen and bathroom. “The contractors did a beautiful job,” says the 73 year old from Anston. “I don’t know how I coped before, it’s 100 percent better now.”

Derek says he didn’t really have any worries before the work began on his bungalow – in fact he wanted the work to start as soon as possible. “The old kitchen was ripped out and the new one’s very nice, they’ve made a really good job,” says Derek. “The cupboards have all been altered so I can get into them more easily and they put the washer under the sink, which is a lot better. It feels more spacious the way they’ve laid it out, it’s much better now. They checked all the wiring and it was pretty new so they just put in a few double sockets. They took out the whole bathroom – bath, sink, loo, the lot.”

Work began in November 2007 and finished in January. But it was not all plain sailing. “There was a leak in the kitchen and the bathroom which went on for ages and a floor was put down and had to be taken up again,” says Derek. But overall he says the disruption wasn’t too bad. “The workers came in through the back door to the kitchen and the bathroom so they weren’t coming through the living room and there wasn’t a lot of mess.”

Upheaval was well worth it!

Work on the inside of Debbie McKnight’s home began at the start of the Easter holidays.

There couldn’t have been a worse time with both girls off school, it was a nightmare!” Says Debbie, 41, who has two children, Megan, fourteen, and Brooke, eight.  “To be honest though I was just glad they’d got started as there was so much to do. At the end of the day, if you want it doing, you just have to live with it.” And Debbie, from Doncaster, East Dene, certainly had a lot to live with.

The property is a non-traditional Council house and hadn’t been touched for 30 years. She has had a new roof fitted, a wall and window bricked up, a ceiling pulled down and replaced, a complete rewire, central heating installed and a new bathroom and kitchen fitted.

Below: the McKnight family in their new kitchen.

Debbie says, “The roof took three weeks to do and the inside took five weeks. There is a lot of disruption involved especially if you’ve got children and pets. At one point we were living upstairs with the microwave and no kitchen and moving the dog from one room to another to keep her out of the way. There was a lot more disruption than I’d anticipated and there are lots of little problems and snags along the way.”

But she has nothing but praise for the contractors working on behalf of 2010 Rotherham Ltd. “Every person that came here cleared up after themselves and any problems they sorted out straight away,” she says.

So was it all worth it? “Yes, definitely,” says Debbie. “Everything’s really nice and there’s just no comparison to how it was before.”
