What is 2010 doing about gender equality?

2010’s work with the support of Jive (a national organisation that works to bring women into science, engineering and technology), to address equality in this area has included:

· Providing a variety of flexible working options to ensure a healthy work life balance.

· Reviewing our recruitment and selection process (and as a consequence now have 7 women operatives rather than 1!).

· Running ‘The CAT’ (a gender awareness survey that identifies attitudes to gender in the work place).

· Delivering specific gender awareness training.

· Offering wider horizons placements.

· Offering taster skills sessions on two consecutive International Women’s Days.

· Taking part in an international conference promoting good practice.

· Setting up a ‘Women in Trades’ support group and addressing issues raised (for example, getting a uniform that fits!).

· Promoting women in trades through articles in our magazine ‘Round Your Place’ and on local radio.

· Providing same gender interviews for customers who prefer it.

Our work has been recognised at a national level, with our former Chief Executive Isobel Riley giving a keynote speech at national conference. We have also been quoted in Best practice guides. We will be working hard to develop our work in this area and build on our achievements.
