High Performance in Empty Properties for 2010 Rotherham
14/05/10
2010 Rotherham is celebrating a massive decrease in the number of empty properties being prepared to be re-let at any one time.
Each week, a number of properties become vacant and are refurbished in preparation for new tenants.

This means that, at any one point in time, there are always a proportion of empty homes within Rotherham Borough Council's 21,500 properties (managed by 2010 Rotherham).

Just 242 properties were vacant at the beginning of this financial year (April). This means that the percentage of empty Council housing stock in the town has fallen - from 1.91% in 2008-09 to 1.15% in 2009-10.

The rent loss associated with empty homes has subsequently dropped. It now stands at 1.35% compared to 1.82% on the previous year, which represents better value money for rent and tax payers as the rental received from these properties can be spent on improved services.

The average re-let time for an empty home in the borough reduced has also fallen - from 39.45 days to 18.35 days, a significant reduction which makes 2010 Rotherham's performance the best regionally and puts 2010 Rotherham amongst the top performing nationally.

Meanwhile, 2010 Rotherham let over 1700 properties during 2009-10, an increase of more than 250 homes on the previous year.

Empty Homes Manager, Adrian Cheetham, explained: "The team is rightly proud of what they have achieved for the town over the last year. We have worked in partnership with other parts of 2010 Rotherham and Rotherham Borough Council to identify improvements and the results of all our efforts are plain to see.

He added: "We and our partners hope to do even better this coming year to raise our national ranking still further."
