Borough Environmental Training Scheme (BETS)

The BETS scheme helps young people who are not in full-time education, employment or training, to get the skills and experience they need to increase their opportunities.

2010 Rotherham Ltd in partnership with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council and Morthyng Ltd, offers young people, aged between 16 and 18, the opportunity to work in horticulture and other community based work. Where possible young people work in their local area, increasing awareness of the needs of where they live and instilling pride in the community.

Young people attend six weeks training induction with Morthyng Ltd before starting their placements, and receive ongoing “off the job” training via day release.

A typical working day for young people on the scheme includes activities like tidying up gardens as part of the gardening scheme, bringing un-maintained open space back into use and fence painting.

The work is carried out under the supervision of 2010 and is linked to the Government’s “Cleaner, Safer, Greener” agenda, with 2010 prioritising activities like environmental maintenance and graffiti removal following feedback from customers.

Also the best young people from the BETS scheme can, through interview, gain 6 months paid employment as an estates officer.

If you are interested in taking part in the BETS scheme, please fill in a feedback form or contact your local Connexions office.
